The 73rd Emmys began with a bang. Host Cedric the Entertainer began giving a passionate speech about what television means to him, and memories of watching television with his grandmother. Then he promised that the show would be a return to fun award show antics of years past, as opposed to stuffier socially distanced shows of the past year.

"Some of y'all thought this celebration would be more subdued, kind of like an Emmy's light, but that's not the way this host treats his best friend," said Cedric.

Then the show erupted with a musical medley in tribute to recently deceased rapper Biz Markie, who died on July 16, 2021. He was joined on stage by LL Cool J, Lil Dicky and Rita Wilson, who all delivered charismatic verses (Lil Dicky's included a slight diss to "Ted Lasso" for its 20 nominations).

"TV, you got what I need. But you say he's just a friend, but you say he's just a friend," the entire crowd sang.

The monologue was far shorter than in years past, with the show moving along at a rapid pace perhaps intended to keep audiences engaged after a troubling trend of sinking ratings for other award shows like the Grammys, Oscars and Golden Globes. After the musical number, the show went straight into dishing out two awards (to Lil Dicky's dismay, "Ted Lasso" took home two acting awards) before a more traditional string of jokes from Cedric the Entertainer.
