Naomi Judd, of Grammy-winning duo The Judds, dies at 76 - The Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Naomi Judd, whose family harmonies with daughter Wynonna turned them into the Grammy-winning country stars The Judds, has died. She was 76.

Her daughters, Wynonna and Ashley, announced her death on Saturday in a statement provided to The Associated Press.

“Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness,” the statement said. “We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”

Naomi Judd died near Nashville, Tennessee, said a statement on behalf of her husband and fellow singer, Larry Strickland. It said no further details about her death would be released and asked for privacy as the family grieves.

The Judds were to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday and they had just announced an arena tour to begin in the fall, their first tour together in over a decade.

The mother-daughter performers scored 14 No. 1 songs in a career that spanned nearly three decades. The red-headed duo combined the traditional Appalachian sounds of bluegrass with polished pop stylings, scoring hit after hit in the 1980s. Wynonna led the duo with her powerful vocals, while Naomi provided harmonies and stylish looks on stage.

They also made a return to awards shows when they performed at the CMT Music Awards earlier this month.

“Honored to have witnessed “Love Can Build a Bridge” just a few short weeks ago,” singer Maren Morris posted on Twitter on Saturday.

“This is heartbreaking news! Naomi Judd was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known,” singer Travis Tritt posted on Twitter, noting that he had worked with Judd several times on screen and during performances.

“Country music lost a true legend…sing with the angels, Naomi!!! We’re all sending up prayers for the Judd family today,” singer Carrie Underwood wrote on Twitter.

After rising to the top of country music, they called it quits in 1991 after doctors diagnosed Naomi Judd with hepatitis C. Wynonna continued her solo career.

The Judds’ hits included “Love Can Build a Bridge” in 1990,“Mama He’s Crazy” in 1984, “Why Not Me” in 1984,“Turn It Loose” in 1988, “Girls Night Out” in 1985, “Rockin’ With the Rhythm of the Rain” in 1986 and “Grandpa” in 1986.

Born Diana Ellen Judd in Ashland, Kentucky, Naomi was working as a single mother and nurse in Nashville, when she and Wynonna started singing together professionally. Their unique harmonies, together with elements of acoustic music, bluegrass and blues, made them stand out in the genre at the time.

“We had a such a stamp of originality on what we were trying to do,” Naomi Judd told The AP after it was announced that they would be joining the Country Music Hall of Fame.

In an interview with the AP in March, Naomi Judd said she was already deep into preparation for the upcoming tour and was looking forward to the Hall of Fame induction.

“To have all the incredible opportunities that I’ve had, being reminded of all that just makes me very humbled and I just want to bask in the moment,” Judd said.

Wynonna Judd remarked that throughout their lives, their music had kept them together.

“Music is the bridge between mom and me, and it it bonds us together,” she told the AP. “Even in the not easy times.”

The Judds released six studio albums and an EP between 1984 and 1991 and won nine Country Music Association Awards and seven from the Academy of Country Music. They earned a total of five Grammy Awards together on hits like “Why Not Me” and “Give A Little Love,” and Naomi earned a sixth Grammy for writing “Love Can Build a Bridge.”

The Judds also performed at the halftime of the 1994 Super Bowl, along with Travis Tritt, Clint Black and Tanya Tucker.

The Judds sang about family, the belief in marriage and the virtue of fidelity. Because Naomi was so young looking, the two were mistaken for sisters early in their career. She was also known to prefer flashy stage outfits, full of sparkles and rhinestones, over casual boots and cowboy style clothing.

They first got attention singing on Ralph Emery’s morning show in early 1980, where the host named them the “Soap Sisters” because Naomi said she used to make her own soap.

After the success of “Mama He’s Crazy,” they won the Horizon Award at the 1984 CMA Awards. Naomi started her speech by saying “Slap the dog and spit in the fire!”

Naomi Judd was open about her health struggles, as well as severe depression and anxiety. In her memoir, “River of Time,” she described her diagnosis of hepatitis C, which she said she unknowingly contracted during her time as a nurse. She said that by 1995, her doctors had told her she was completely free of the virus.

In the memoir, she described feeling like she had lost her identity when she returned home after a 2010 reunion tour, isolating herself at her home and dealing with crippling panic attacks. She also said that she had been dealing with trauma from childhood sexual abuse. She was admitted to a psychiatric ward at a hospital and spent time in an outpatient treatment program.

Daughter Ashley Judd is an actor and humanitarian known for her roles in such movies as “Kiss the Girls,” ″Double Jeopardy” and “Heat.”

Strickland, who was a backup singer for Elvis Presley, was married to Naomi Judd for 32 years.

Bill Murray Speaks Out After ‘Being Mortal’ Set Complaint - Hollywood Reporter

Bill Murray is addressing the Being Mortal set complaint that led to the production suspension on the Aziz Ansari-directed film.

Speaking to CNBC on Saturday, the actor said there was a “difference of opinion” with a woman that he was working with that led to the complaint and production pause. “I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way,” he told the outlet.

He did not provide further detail on what exactly happened on set, but CNBC reported that Murray, who spoke about the incident during an on-camera interview with the business network at the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting, “was optimistic” that production would restart and that the incident would be settled between him and the woman.

Related Stories

“As of now we are talking, and we are trying to make peace with each other,” the actor-comedian, who is also reportedly a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder, said. “We are both professionals. We like each others’ work. We like each other, I think, and if we can’t really get along and trust each other, there’s no point in going further working together or making the movie as well. It’s been quite an education for me.”

Murray said he’s been spending time since production was shut down thinking about what happened.

“The world is different than it was when I was a little kid. You know, what I always thought was funny as a little kid isn’t necessarily the same as what’s funny now,” he said. “Things change and the times change, so it’s important for me to figure it out. And I think the most important thing is that it’s best for the other person. I thought about it, and if it’s not best for the other person, doesn’t matter what happens for me.”

Murray stated that “what would make me the happiest” is if both he and the woman are able to “go back into work and…trust each other and work at the work that we’ve both spent a lot of time developing the skill of.”

As for his behavior and learning from his mistakes, Murray stated that “I think it’s a sad dog that can’t learn anymore.”

“That’s a really sad puppy that can’t learn anymore,” he continued. “I don’t want to be that sad dog, and I have no intention of it.”

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on April 21 that Searchlight Pictures suspended production on Ansari’s feature directorial debut after there was a complaint of inappropriate behavior, filed the previous week, involving Murray. A source close to the Being Mortal production told THR that the director and his producing partner Youree Henley were working with the Disney-backed studio to figure out the next steps.

Searchlight is currently investigating the matter but told THR in a statement that they do not “comment on investigations.”

The film, based on the Atul Gawande nonfiction book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, also stars Ansari — who wrote the script — Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer.

Naomi Judd, of Grammy-winning duo The Judds, dies at 76 - The Associated Press

Met Gala 2022 'Gilded Glamour' theme gets mixed reactions: 'Impeccable timing' - Fox News

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The 2022 Met Gala theme has gotten some mixed reactions.

The much-anticipated Met Gala is back on the first Monday in May this year following a brief hiatus due to the coronavirus. Guests attending part two of September's event have been told the theme is "Gilded Glamour and White Tie."

As usual, the sartorial theme comes from the exhibit the gala launches — "In America: An Anthology of Fashion," which is the second of star curator Andrew Bolton’s two-part show exploring the roots of American style.

However, many thought it ironic considering the current state of the American economy. The U.S. economy shrank at a 1.4% annual rate last quarter despite solid spending by consumers and businesses.

"It's too on-the-nose for the Met Gala to have a ‘Gilded Age’ theme on the same day we know the US economy is contracting," a Business Insider reporter wrote on Twitter.

"Gilded Glamour? They're begging for the pitchforks, aren't they?" Tom Bevans, co-founder and President of Real Clear Politics, tweeted.

"The WHCA and Met Gala just a few days apart, right after today's economic news. Just absolutely perfect optics for all involved," another reporter added.

"Impeccable timing," David Burge tweeted.

Others are looking forward to the event and have commented on who might wear the theme best.

"Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj would CHEW the Gilded Glamour theme for this year's Met Gala," one user wrote alongside photos of the two.

"The Met Gala’s theme is Gilded Glamour? Doja’s been ready," another user added.

The theme and attendees usually attract some criticism from onlookers.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., received criticism after she attended the gala in September wearing a dress that said "Tax the Rich." The dress choice drew criticism as tickets to the Met Gala can reportedly cost upward of $30,000.

Generally companies buy tables. A fashion label — Michael Kors, for example — would then host its desired celebrities or fashion muses. But each paid seat reportedly costs around $35,000, though some guests are invited for free.

While speaking on the red carpet, Ocasio-Cortez said she discussed with the dress's designer, Aurora James, "what it means to be working-class women of color at the Met."

"And we said, we can't just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions, and while the Met is known for its spectacle, we should have a conversation about it," Ocasio-Cortez said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

‘Ozark’ Boss, Jason Bateman and Laura Linney on Avoiding a “Junk Food” Ending and the “Choicefulness” of Final Episodes - Hollywood Reporter

When deciding how to end Ozark, showrunner, writer and EP Chris Mundy said he wanted to honor the critically acclaimed Netflix series’ past seasons by only throwing the kinds of dramatic curveballs the show has been known for.

“I think the main thing was, we really wanted to be true to the story we were telling,” Mundy told The Hollywood Reporter at the Ozark finale premiere in New York about what to expect during the show’s final seven episodes, which drop this weekend. “We were always pretty brutal throughout the seasons, so we didn’t want to chicken out at the last second. At the same time, you want to be surprised and do things all the way up to the very end. Up until that last second or so, we wanted to stay ourselves.”

Related Stories

“So there are things that will be surprising,” he added on the carpet outside the Paris Theater. “But they’ll be surprising in a way that, hopefully, we’re surprising sometimes.”

Executive producer and director Jason Bateman said that when it came to his role in wrapping four seasons of the streaming crime drama, he mostly tried to be a “good listener” and thus “good partner” to Mundy as the showrunner worked out an ending that attempts to answer some pivotal questions. That includes whether the Byrds should pay a bill or get away with it.

“We talked in the writer’s room about building a myth but then creating a curse,” Murphy explained. “We wanted them to build a myth that perhaps creates their own curse, and then see what happened to them because of that curse when it all rolls out in that final 30 minutes.”

Ultimately, Bateman said, the final set of episodes had to consider the kind of definitive statement the show wanted to make and, specifically, what message Mundy wished to send. “He had a bunch of choices that he could have made,” Bateman said. “I think he made an incredible choice to not take the junk food sort of ending of like a big huge crescendo, guns blazing. It is something pretty measured, consistent with his taste and what he’d been doing for episodes beforehand. It sort of ends in a way that is, I think, no more hysterical than any other ending of any other episode. It just elegantly comes to the close of symptomatic stuff, story stuff and character stuff. It just stuck it, I thought.”

That close was guided by a creative approach, Mundy told THR, that the show has always taken, which sees the writers propose the biggest questions the season will answer early on and circle back around to by the end. With how Mundy and the writers carefully plotted the show, viewers have already been pointed toward the big stakes Ozark wants to address in its finale.

“We always kind of put a stake in the ground early in the season and declare what we’re doing, and then people forget about it. And then hopefully at the end, they’re like, ‘Oh, yeah. They declared that'” Mundy said of the show’s narrative style. “Early in the first seven [of season four] when Wendy says to Jonah, ‘You need to grow up. This is America. People don’t care where your fortune came from’ — there’s things like that where we stake our claim and then say, ‘OK, we’re riding toward that.'”

It was also shaped by a desire to explore particular themes in the show’s final breaths. “For us, we were talking about love and family through the end — and choicefulness,” the writer and EP said. “If it’s smart to love unconditionally or if you should actually put conditions on things. Can you choose whether or not you stay in a family or not? How much is blood, and how much is what you decide for yourself as you grow up? Those were some things that we were cycling through a lot, emotionally, for everybody.”

The result is that, much like the seasons before it, the final seven episodes are shaped by choices. But when it comes to the Byrds and other characters, the most crucial decision that leads to their finale fate may have been made long before the last season.

For Bateman, it was trusting that the ends justify the means, but more so “getting out of the driver’s seat and letting Wendy go do her thing.”

“Marty was pretty guilt-laden that he had gotten them all into this mess and thought maybe she’s going to get them out of that,” the Ozark star said. “So, to just kind of pull it over, let somebody else drive home for the last two seasons — it was a really interesting thing that Chris did. That power dynamic of the relationship in the family was super smart.”

For actress and star Laura Linney, the choice for her character Wendy, a person “who represents the people who can justify very bad behavior for themselves and think they’re doing something positive,” actually happened much earlier in the series. “I think it’s the very first decision that they make that you see in the flashback in season one, where they’re at a spa and they decide to enter into a gray zone,” she told THR.

As for whether the ending will leave the door open for more Ozark in another form, there’s a “universe” that might be ripe for expansion alongside the original series, which will continue to live on, says MRC president of TV Elise Henderson.

“I think Ozark itself is going to live forever. I think it’s going to be one of those shows that will live in the canon of great TV from start to finish,” she told THR. “And I think that one of the coolest things about Ozark is that I would call it a world-building show. I think we built a world. There’s a universe that’s been created.”

Though, how much that universe is explored going forward is up to Mundy.

“I’ve thought about it a little bit,” he said. “If there were an organic way, I would never be closed to it.”

MRC is a co-owner of The Hollywood Reporter through a joint venture with Penske Media titled P-MRC.

MCU’s Fantastic Four movie will not be helmed by Spider-Man director - Polygon

Marvel’s going to need a new director for its upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Director Jon Watts, who was previously attached to the project, has parted ways with the project, citing a need for a break from superhero movies. Deadline reported the move on Friday, and it was quickly confirmed by Disney and Watts.

Watts previously worked with Disney on all three of its Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. Watts was signed on to direct Fantastic Four next, but after helming the entire Spider-Man trilogy, it seems he decided that he needed a break from superheroes.

“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life changing experience for me,” Watts said in a statement to Deadline. “I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

Marvel studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that there was no bad blood between the director and the studio, saying, “Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”

Disney announced Fantastic Four in 2020, but the movie was never given a release date.

'American Idol' winner Laine Hardy arrested, accused of secretly bugging female LSU student’s dorm room - Yahoo Entertainment

Just days before he is set to appear on ABC’s “Great Idol Reunion” special celebrating American Idol’s 20th anniversary, Season 17 Idol winner Laine Hardy posted a cryptic social media statement revealing that he is under investigation by the Louisiana State University Police Department.

“Earlier today, I received a warrant due to allegations made against me and have been fully cooperative with the Louisiana State University Police Department,” Hardy, age 21, announced Thursday evening. “I understand that my career has thrust me into the public spotlight, and I embrace that wholeheartedly as my entire world belongs to my music and my fans. However, due to the sensitive nature of this allegation, I humbly ask for privacy at this time. I have the utmost respect for the law and will assist in their investigation as needed moving forward.”

Hardy’s attorney, C. Frank Holthaus, confirmed in a press statement that Hardy “did receive a warrant for his arrest and has been and will continue to be completely cooperative with the Baton Rouge Police Department on this matter. Due to the public nature of Mr. Hardy’s profession, we ask for privacy at this time.”

While Hardy and Holthaus did not divulge any details about the allegations against him, on Friday morning LSU spokesman Ernie Ballard confirmed Hardy’s arrest via the following statement: “Laine Reed Hardy (Non-LSU student) was arrested by LSU Police today and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for violation of 15:1303 — Interception and Disclosure of Wire, Electronic, or Oral Communication. His arrest warrant has been filed with clerk of court.”

Louisiana news channel WAFB reported Friday morning that Hardy has in fact been accused of putting a listening device in female student’s dorm room at LSU — a crime that carries a maximum penalty of a $10,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison. Hardy was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Friday on a charge of intercepting communications, after surrendering to authorities on the warrant that had been issued Thursday. According to WAFB, a female LSU student and her roommate found a recording device “to monitor her conversations” inside their dorm room at Azalea Hall on April 6 and alerted campus police. Police then uncovered evidence of secret recordings, made over 10 different days in February of this year, featuring audio of the baritone singer’s “distinguishable voice” and mentions of his name by other parties.

Hardy’s booking document, obtained by the New York Post, states that “the victim… found a fake Instagram on the Defendant’s phone that he used to cover up that he was illegally recording her when he was not around.” The documentation also notes that Hardy “had information about the victim and her actions during Christmas break that was not known to the Defendant.” When the student “confronted” Hardy, he “admitted that he left a ‘bug’ in her room but later discarded it in his pond.”

According to the prison booking documents, “the victim… located a device, appearing to be a phone charger under the victim’s futon,” and after a Google search “she learned it to be a VR-500 Voice Activated Recorder.” On a recording dated Feb. 2, “the victim is heard telling someone about how she figured out the Defendant was recording her” but “doesn’t know if the bug is still in her room.” The female student had been in a romantic relationship with Hardy from November 2021 to February 2022, according to the Post.

Hardy, whose single “Memorize You” was featured in several episodes of ABC’s The Bachelorette this season, is scheduled to duet with his fellow Season 17 country singer Laci Kaye Booth this coming Monday on ABC’s “Great Idol Reunion” special, which will also feature former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson and Idol alumni Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, Maddie Poppe, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Willie Spence, and Grace Kinstler. A source with knowledge of the situation tells Yahoo Entertainment that the one-hour special, which was taped more than a month ago, will air unedited and as planned.

Hardy is just the latest former Idol contestant to find himself in trouble with the law. In February, disgraced finalist Caleb Kennedy, who was disqualified from the show last year after an old racist social media post resurfaced online, was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death. On Thursday, Kennedy appeared before a judge, in his fourth hearing since the DUI crash that killed 54-year-old Larry Parris in Kennedy’s hometown of Spartanburg, S.C. As of this writing, Kennedy is still being held in the Spartanburg County Detention Center awaiting bond. If the 17-year-old is tried as an adult and convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.

Kim Kardashian cleared of defamation in Blac Chyna trial - Page Six

A Los Angeles judge ruled Kim Kardashian should not be held liable against Blac Chyna’s defamation claim.

Documents obtained by Page Six show the court ruled that “no statement” made by the Skims founder, 41, was “alleged to be defamatory” against the “Rob & Chyna” alum, 33.

Chyna’s team previously argued they only needed to prove that each defendant in the case — including Kim, KhloĂ© Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Kris Jenner — took a “responsible part” in defaming Chyna, whose real name is Angela White.

Jurors were told to consider evidence, including emails and messages made by Khloé, Kylie and Kris to network executives.

The court agreed on Friday that there is “no evidence” to support that Kim had a “responsible part” in defaming Chyna, per the documents, so the Skims founder was dropped from the defamation claim.

The ruling was based on the lawyers’ arguments, the court record and papers from the counsel.

Although Kim was absolved of the defamation charge, she is potentially still on the hook for alleged intentional interference with a contract.

Chyna has accused the Kardashian-Jenner family of using their influence to cancel a potential second season of her and ex-fiancĂ© Rob Kardashian’s E! reality show.

However, Jeff Jenkins, former co-president of Bunim-Murray and executive producer of the series, testified last week that networks including BET, VH1, Lifetime and MTV were also uninterested in picking up “Rob & Chyna.”

Chyna is seeking more than $100 million for economic damages, including loss of earnings from social media posts, club and TV appearances and general damages for emotional distress.

The Kardashian-Jenner family’s attorney, Michael Rhodes, tried to get the case dismissed altogether last Friday, arguing that Chyna’s claims were “absurd.”

He also said the total damages amount is based on “unsupported and wildly speculative claims” since she has not provided the appropriate accounting records.

The jury has been deliberating since 9:30 a.m. local time and could make a decision in the case by Friday’s end.

Marvel gives us a glimpse at Professor X in new Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness footage - The A.V. Club

After that whole thing with Marvel Studios (and Andrew Garfield) trying its best to hide that Spider-Man: No Way Home would feature the three Spider-Men basically recreating the pointing meme, Marvel is back to teasing major cameos without officially confirming them.

On Thursday, a 10-second trailer for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness dropped, published by Marvel Studios Canada. The clip teases the inclusion of Peggy Carter as Captain Carter. And there’s also another glimpse at Professor X, whose cameo had already been teased in a previous trailer .We don’t get to see Patrick Stewart’s face; instead we see Professor X resting his hand on his wheelchair—and this time, it’s just like the one from X-Men: The Animated Series.

Though Marvel eventually removed the teaser, CoveredGeekly uploaded it so you can still watch it.

Marvel is so strict with spoilers that director Sam Raimi told Fandango “I couldn’t promise you that Patrick Stewart’s in the picture. That’s all that Marvel will let me say.”

But Stewart seems less worried about confirming that yeah, it was his voice in the previous trailer.

He told CBR, “Well, I had my phone turned off as it happened, so I didn’t hear anything. It wasn’t until the next morning when I woke up and looked at my phone and found that I had been bombarded with responses and that my PR people had sent me reactions that they had detailed and passed onto me.”

He added, “I actually didn’t recognize my own voice, it sounded different. Whether I had a cold or something at the time, I don’t know. But I was astonished, and all they saw was the back of my shoulder, and I think my earlobe, nothing else. There would have been so many connections made. But, uh, it pleased me.”

The Brit has extended his contract for the CBS late-night series for one year and will depart ahead of summer 2023.

Corden will have hosted The Late Late Show for eight and a half years by the time he departs – a major achievement.

“It’s been it’s a really hard decision to leave because I’m so immensely proud of the show,” Corden told Deadline. “I’m thrilled to be extending [for a year]. I always thought I’d do it for five years and then leave, and then I stayed on. I’ve really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure.”

James Corden Addresses ‘Late Late Show’ Departure During Taping: “The Hardest Decision I’ve Ever Had To Make”

Corden signed a contract to host The Late Late Show, which was hosted for nine years by Craig Ferguson, in 2014 and premiered on March 23, 2015.

The Gavin & Stacey co-creator was somewhat of a surprise choice, but he reinvigorated the 12:30 a.m. time slot on CBS and breathed new life into late-night with viral segments such as Carpool Karaoke, Drop the Mic, Spill Your Guts and Crosswalk Musical.

In fact, Corden’s Carpool Karaoke with Adele has been watched more than 250M times on YouTube, while his journey with One Direction has racked up 189M views. The Late Late Show YouTube page itself has had nearly 10B views and has more than 27M subscribers, the second highest in late-night.

CBS chiefs — including President and CEO George Cheeks, CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl, SEVP Programming Thom Sherman and Nick Bernstein, SVP, Late-Night Programming, West Coast — were keen to keep Corden and offered a variety of deals including a three-year extension, a two-year extension and a rolling one-year deal before he made his decision. “My bosses here at CBS have been incredibly supportive and extraordinarily patient with me while I made this decision,” Corden added.

“Seven years ago, James Corden came to the U.S. and took television by storm, with huge creative and comedic swings that resonated in a big way with viewers on-air and online. From Crosswalk the Musical to the legendary Carpool Karaoke, and every unique comedy segment he introduced, James has truly reimagined many elements of the late night format. He has also been the consummate network showman, entertaining audiences from his nightly perch at Television City as well as the Tony and Grammy stage,” said Cheeks. “In my two years at CBS, I’ve had the privilege to see James’ creative genius up close and experience his valuable partnership with CBS, both as a performer and a producer. We wish he could stay longer, but we are very proud he made CBS his American home and that this partnership will extend one more season on The Late Late Show.”

Corden’s move marks the second high-profile change in late-night in the last 12 months after a relatively stable few years. Conan O’Brien recently left the space after a long career behind the desk, and Jimmy Kimmel’s future is also uncertain with the comedian publicly discussing whether he will continue to host his ABC show.

CBS also will  have to work out what it does after Corden and how they will replace him.

There’s been much speculation during the past few years about whether Corden would exit The Late Late Show and return to the UK. But Corden told Deadline that he and his family “genuinely don’t know the answer to that.”

“It’s something we think about and we talk about a lot, but we haven’t really made a decision on that yet,” he added. “That’s the life side of things which we’ll figure out. I love living here. I love everything it’s given. My family and I have never taken this incredible adventure for granted. Every day I drive down Sunset to work and I just think I’m from High Wycombe.”

Corden always has been an anomaly in late-night, starring in films such as Peter Rabbit, Cats and The Prom, where he received his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, and hosting HBO Max’s Friends: The Reunion, while he was hosting a nightly talk show. He is also a partner in Fulwell 73, the production company responsible for Hulu’s The Kardashians and Camila Cabello’s Cinderella, and stars alongside Sally Hawkins in Amazon’s upcoming comedy-drama series Mammals.

“There’s still some other things that I feel I want to do,” he said. “I’d like to try and write. There’s some [stories] I’d like to tell. I’d like to see if I’m capable of it. The fact that it’s terrifying is the reason to do it.”

James Corden

But first he’s got 200 more shows to go, which will take him to around 1,250 since he started. Having told his staff this afternoon, Corden wanted to give his entire team a good amount of notice so that the move wasn’t a surprise.

Produced by CBS Studios and Fulwell 73, and exec produced by Rob Crabbe and Ben Winston, Corden called The Late Late Show the “most joyous working environment”.

“Out of respect for all of the [staff], I want to tell them that now and say that we can really go into this last year with absolute enthusiasm and passion and love,” he said. “These shows are not built by one person. I’m very fortunate I get to work with some people whose talents and gifts just blow my mind.”

The extension also means that he’ll get to spend some time on the putting green with his friend Mark Noble, captain of his beloved West Ham United, who is retiring at the end of this season.

“He’s the happiest that I’m not leaving in September because he’s desperate to get out and play some golf,” Corden laughs. “I’ll have been here for eight and a half years, he’s been at that club since he was 9. Nothing makes me happier to be thought of in the same breath as Mark Noble, but I would be undeserving of such praise.”

Now, Corden and his team have to try and top their entrance – where Corden persuaded Tom Hanks to do a career retrospective with him in his opening episode, which also featured appearances from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Billy Crystal, Chris Rock and Meryl Streep.

“I’ll miss the adrenaline of thinking, ‘Next week I’m going to jump out of a plane with Tom Cruise, or in two weeks’ time, we’re going to drive around the White House in a car with Michelle Obama or sing ‘Penny Lane’ with Paul McCartney driving down Penny Lane,’” he said.

“All of my greatest ambitions for what it what [the show] could be, it’s absolutely surpassed all of them,” he added. “My intention is to try and go out in exactly the same way we came in, which is just going out with a with a bang.

Watch Live: Johnny Depp's attorneys question remote witnesses as trial in suit against ex-wife Amber Heard continues - CBS News

Johnny Depp's attorneys are presenting recorded testimony and testimony from remote witnesses Thursday as they continue his case against ex-wife Amber Heard. The latest witnesses come after Depp's attorneys presented recorded depositions from Los Angeles Police Department officers who responded to Depp and Heard's home after a fight, as well as a doorman and a former agent Wednesday.

Depp is suing Heard for libel in Fairfax County Circuit Court after she wrote an op-ed piece in The Washington Post referring to herself as "a public figure representing domestic abuse."

The article doesn't mention Depp by name, but his lawyers say the article contains "defamation by implication," arguing that it clearly refers to allegations of domestic abuse made by Heard when she filed for divorce in 2016. Depp said the Post article contributed to an unfairly ruined reputation that made him a Hollywood outcast and cost him his role in the lucrative "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie franchise. Heard's attorneys say only Depp is to blame for his marred career.

On Thursday, the court heard testimony from the CEO and General Counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Terence Dougherty, who said Heard had voiced her desire to donate $3.5 million to the non-profit — half of her divorce settlement from Depp. The ACLU nominated Heard as an ambassador and drafted the op-ed for The Washington Post.

Dougherty said that Heard had not donated $3.5 million, and had paid $350,000 directly, in addition to a $100,000 check from Johnny Depp which was credited to Heard's amount.

According to additional evidence introduced Thursday, Heard pushed to have details of her marriage with fellow actor Johnny Depp included in the article, which was strategically timed by both the ACLU and Heard to coincide with the release of her new film "Aquaman."

Dougherty testified that numerous ACLU lawyers reviewed the article at various stages, and asked Heard's lawyers to review the piece as well to ensure it did not run afoul of a non-disclosure agreement she had with Depp in connection with the couple's 2016 divorce.

During those discussions, Heard sent back an edited version approved by her lawyers that "specifically neutered much of the copy regarding her marriage," according to an email from Jessica Weitz, an ACLU employee who coordinated with Heard.

According to the email, though, Heard was looking for a way to have a deleted passage restored to the article.

The various drafts of the articles were not shown to the jury, so it's not clear how many personal details were in the first draft and how much Heard's lawyers had excised. But the final version contains very little about Heard's personal experiences and doesn't mention Depp at all. In addition to the passage about "a public figure representing domestic abuse," in another passage she writes, "I had the rare vantage point of seeing, in real time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse."

Dougherty also testified that "the language that wound up in the final op-ed piece was very different from the original language" in the draft, Dougherty said. "It did not refer directly to Ms. Heard's relationship with Johnny Depp."

While the libel lawsuit is supposed to center on whether Depp was defamed in the article, most of the trial has focused on ugly details of the couple's brief marriage.

Depp has denied ever striking Heard. Heard's attorneys say Depp physically and sexually abused her and that Depp's denials lack merit because he was often drunk and high to the point of blacking out.

Wednesday marks the 11th day in the trial, which is expected to last a month. Depp himself concluded a grueling four days on the witness stand Monday; Heard is expected to testify later in the trial.

Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Blasts Off With Debut Screening at CinemaCon - Hollywood Reporter

Paramount Pictures added fuel to the final day of CinemaCon 2022 on Thursday by unveiling a trailer for Mission: Impossible 7, showcasing another death-defying Tom Cruise stunt and teasing Damien Chazelle’s anticipated Hollywood fable Babylon. But the true centerpiece was the first full showing of Cruise’s new Top Gun: Maverick that closed out the Thursday morning program.

The long-delayed Top Gun: Maverick, returning Tom Cruise as the ultra-gifted and confident Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, was originally set to hit theaters in summer 2020. The COVID-19 crisis waylaid those plans. Paramount and Skydance subsequently moved the film several more times so that it could get a proper global theatrical release.

Related Stories

The decision to treat theater owners to the first screening of the movie was a way to thank them for their patience, and it appeared to pay off. But before the big debut, the presentation kicked off with an electric performance by female rap trio J.J. Fad of their hit single “Supersonic,” backed by more than a dozen dancers clad in red, white and blue sweats as footage from Par’s latest hit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 played on the big screen overhead.

Known for his CinemaCon pranks, Paramount president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson didn’t disappoint. He arrived onstage wearing the mustache and goggles that are favored by Sonic character Dr. Ivo Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey.

“Everyone awake?” Aronson asked. “Good! Welcome to Paramount Pictures, it’s so great to be back here.” Aronson arrived with good news by recounting the studio’s run of four consecutive No. 1 box office openings: Scream ($140 million thus far), Jackass Forever ($80 million), The Lost City ($130 million worldwide to date), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (opened to record-breaking $72.1 million). “We can’t wait to keep momentum.”

He then muse that, since audiences are finally returning to theaters, “Fortune favors the bold,” adding, “But we are not completely back. Now is not the time for complacency. We must work together in every way possible.”

In doing so, he called on theater owners to meet the studios halfway (“Help us help you”) to enhance the guest experience by not playing too many trailers that wind up numbing audiences and making sure the price ratio is fair for moviegoers.

Aronson then presented footage from the studio’s 2022 and 2023 offerings, with the biggest reveal being Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, an epic about old Hollywood’s transition from the silent film era to talkies starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Not much is known about the plot specifics, but it appears to be a high-octane, razzle-dazzle drama with Pitt playing silent film star John Gilbert and Margot Robbie as icon Clara Bow. Pitt’s character, seen in several scenes in white boxers and tank top, at one point says, “When I first moved to Hollywood, the signs on all the doors said, ‘No actors and no dogs allowed.’ We changed that.”

Robbie’s Bow is shown in the preview footage on sets and dancing at a giant backyard Hollywood house party. While on set, as the camera moves in to capture her face, Robbie says, “What do you say we come in for my close-up now?”

The Babylon cast also includes Katherine Waterston, Max Minghella, Flea, Samara Weaving, Rory Scovel, Lukas Haas, Eric Roberts, P.J. Byrne, Damon Gupton, Olivia Wilde, Spike Jonze, Phoebe Tonkin, Jean Smart, Li Jun Li, Jovan Adepo, Diego Calva, Chloe Fineman, Jeff Garlin and Troy Metcalf.

Paramount chairman Brian Robbins, in his first CinemaCon presentation, later called Chazelle’s film “brilliant” and “truly spectacular.” During his time onstage, Robbins assured theater owners how much he values the power of the big screen. He also touted the studio’s recent success The Lost City and Sonic 2, both of which played exclusively in theaters. “Theatrical films are the cornerstone of our business,” said Robbins.

Robbins then turned his attention to Cruise, calling him the studio’s most important relationship and the “hardest-working and most daring performer in Hollywood.” Unfortunately for CinemaCon attendees, Robbins confirmed that the actor would not be there in person as he was busy filming. But Cruise did deliver a “special message,” true to the compliment and his CinemaCon history.

Cut to Cruise, standing up from his seat in an antique red plane and as the camera zoomed out, it was revealed that the plane was hovering high above a canyon in South Africa. “Hey everyone,” Cruise said, with his voice muffled slightly due to the wind. “Wish I could be there with you. I’m sorry for the extra noise. As you can see, we are filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible.”

Just then, a yellow plane appeared with helmer Christopher McQuarrie inside and he instructed Cruise that it was time to go. Before flying off, Cruise introduced the first look at the film’s trailer, followed by Top Gun: Maverick in its entirety. “Let’s all try to have a great summer. See you at the movies!”

The seventh Mission: Impossible is due out July 14, 2023, with an eighth and presumably final Cruise-led Mission due out June 28, 2024. The seventh film has been given the subtitle Dead Reckoning: Part 1.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the new Top Gun follows Maverick as he’s asked to train a new team of elite aviators at the behest of Val Kilmer’s Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, now a Navy admiral (Kilmer has a brief cameo). Kosinski and one of the film’s stars, Glen Powell, were in the audience.

Top Gun: Maverick will make its world premiere in San Diego on May 4 before heading to the Cannes Film Festival. It lands in theaters domestically on May 28.

The movie was the only summer tentpole screened in full for exhibitors at CinemaCon 2022, which wraps today.

Kim Kardashian Broke Down In Tears After Kanye West Flew Across The Country To Retrieve Her Alleged Second Sex Tape And The Behind-The-Scenes Footage Is So Emotional - BuzzFeed News

Kanye vowed that he and Kim aren’t “getting extorted” ever again after Kim called him in tears when their 6-year-old saw an ad for her alleged second sex tape online.

The latest episode of The Kardashians has finally given us some much-needed closure on Kim Kardashian’s alleged second sex tape.

For those who aren’t aware, Kim has repeatedly denied the allegations that she and ex-boyfriend Ray J have a second “unreleased and more graphic” sex tape, which began circulating last September, when his former manager, Wack100, claimed he was in possession of it.

John Shearer / WireImage

“Kanye [West], holla at me, bro,” he said on an episode of Bootleg Kev’s podcast when asked if he’d seen Kim and Ray J’s infamous 2007 tape. “We got part two on the laptop. Ain't never been seen. We'd love for you to have it.”

At the time that Wack100’s claims were made public, Kim and her family happened to be filming their new reality show The Kardashians, which is now available to stream on Hulu. And, unsurprisingly, the plot has largely been centered around the alleged sex tape so far.

In the very first episode, which aired a couple of weeks ago, Kim’s 6-year-old son Saint came across an advertisement for the tape while he was playing Roblox online.

“It was clickbait insinuating that if you click on it, there was gonna be a new sex tape coming out,” Kim explained in a confessional. “Had my son been a little bit older and been able to read, I would’ve been mortified. But I died inside.”

Hulu / Entertainment Tonight

During the rest of that episode and the next, Kim — who said she was “99 percent sure” there was no such tape, and quickly urged her team to take up legal action — freaked out over the mysterious footage. She even began to question if she’d unknowingly been filmed by Ray J, disturbingly saying: “The fact that these people keep saying they have a tape — what if I was fucking sleeping and he stuck a dildo up my ass? I don’t know, I don’t remember anything.”

At one point, Kim phoned her ex-husband Kanye West and broke down into tears while telling him about the predicament she was in. “Over my dead body is this shit gonna happen to me again,” she said. “I just want it gone.”

Hulu / Entertainment Tonight

She later explained that it was only Kanye who managed to calm her down, as he told her to “stop worrying about the public perception” while reminding her of her “power.”

Now, in the latest episode — which aired last night — Kanye takes things a step further and offers Kim an unmatched sense of relief, as he literally retrieves the footage for her ahead of her Saturday Night Live hosting debut.

For some context, Kim and Kanye — who share four children — were on good terms as coparents at the time that the episode was being filmed, so it’s not surprising to her friends and family when he stops by with the grand surprise while she’s prepping for SNL.

“I just came from the airport,” he tells her mom Kris Jenner. “I had to go to L.A. and come back ‘cause I just traveled to get something for Kim.”

“You went all the way to L.A. to get something for Kim? You are something else,” Kris says, before asking Kanye what it is that he’s got. He tells her, “Well that’s what [Kim] wants to show you.”

In a separate room, Kim has gathered her innermost circle to unveil the mystery item that Kanye has brought her. "I wanted to show you guys… " she says before cutting off as she becomes visibly emotional. “I was just gonna cry, and I don’t wanna cry.”

But Kim’s voice immediately breaks as she fights to hold back tears. “Kanye flew home last night and he came back this morning, and I wanna show you guys what he got me,” she says.

Opening a large suitcase on the floor, Kim says: “He got me all of the sex tape back. He flew home and got the computer it was on [and] the hard drive.”

“[He] met up with Ray J at the airport and got it all back for me,” she says in tears.

In a confessional, Kim continues: “I know Kanye did this for me, but he also did this for my kids. I wanna shield them from as much as I can, and if I had the power to — or if Kanye has the power to — that is just the most important thing to me, and I’m just so emotional because of it.”

Jamie Mccarthy

“It just means a lot to me,” she adds, while the camera films her loved ones embracing her in a huge hug.

Kris then says, “Thank you for Kanye and for his unbelievable way he does things and the ability to get something done — and probably a big fat huge check so we’re all very grateful.”

Kanye says, “Oh, definitely not no check. We not getting extorted ever again.”

Kevin Mazur

“No way,” Kris agrees. “Well you also knew how much it meant to her, and how hard she’s been trying to do that for years and years.”

Kim then reveals that she watched the tape to see if there was any explicit content. “It was just footage of us at a restaurant, at a nightclub — nothing sexual, nothing weird. And so now I can take a deep breath and not worry about this.”

Karwai Tang / Getty Images

While this marks the first we’ve seen of Kim’s reaction to the retrieved footage, Kanye publicly spoke about it back in January during a wide-ranging interview with Hollywood Unlocked.

Patrick Kovarik / AFP via Getty Images

“I went and got the laptop from Ray J myself that night,” Kanye said of the footage. “I met this man at the airport, then got on a red-eye [flight], came back [and] delivered it to her at 8 a.m. in the morning.”

“I gave it to [Kim], and she cried when she saw it,” he added. “You know why she cried when she seen it on the laptop? Because it represents how much she’s been used. It represents how much people didn’t love her and they just saw her as a commodity.”

Kanye also said that he was annoyed at seeing Kim kiss Pete Davidson that very night on SNL during a skit. “How you gonna bring me to SNL and kiss the dude you dating right in front of me, and everybody’s like, ‘Aw, that’s cool,’” he questioned.

His harsh comments about Kim and Pete — who, of course, are now dating — seemed to spark a huge public feud between the exes, which only escalated over the next couple of months as Kanye simultaneously slammed the mogul and expressed his desires to win her back.

Kanye soon turned his attention to Pete directly, coining the harsh nickname “Skete” and encouraging fans to “scream” at him in public. He also released an animated music video depicting a cartoon figure of the comic being kidnapped, decapitated, and buried alive, and bragged about running him off Instagram when the comic deleted his account.

Nbc / NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images

More recently, Kanye has remained absent from social media since having his Instagram account temporarily suspended for violating its hate speech and bullying policies, after calling Daily Show host Trevor Noah a racial slur in a caption.

You can watch the next episode of The Kardashians on May 5 on Hulu, or Disney+ internationally.
