The 2021 nominations are the first to come following a major review and overhaul of the film awards rules and regulations that was sparked following 2020's #BAFTAsSoWhite controversy.
Nomadland and Rocks lead the pack of nominees for the BAFTA 2021 awards in the most diverse nominations list ever seen in the British Academy’s history, and coming just a year after it was embroiled in the #BaftaSoWhite controversy, sparking a 7-month review and overhaul of the voting rules and regulations.
Chloe Zhao’s awards season favourite set in the American West and Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age drama about a group of inner city London schoolgirls both landed seven nominations each, with The Father, Mank, Minari and Promising Young Woman not far behind with six. The Dig and The Mauritanian earned five.
Among several major highlights from a hugely eclectic list of nominations — which saw a record 50 different film nominated (up from a previous high of 39) — was the directing category in which four female filmmakers were nominated, smashing the previous record (of just one) and ending an almost decade-long all-male run.
Elsewhere, the performance categories — a year after they were heavily criticised for being entirely all-white — are the most diverse in the award’s history and also mix established talent with rising stars. While two-time BAFTA film award winner and Anthony Hopkins receives his seventh nomination, for The Father, newcomer Bukky Bakray, the 18-year-old lead star of Rocks, earns her very first (and from her first film role). Bakray is among 21 of the 24 names in the performance categories who are getting their first BAFTA nominations.
This year, the awards themselves will take place across the weekend of April 10, 11 April, with two shows broadcast virtually from London's Royal Albert Hall. The first show will celebrating the craft of film, with the second covering the performance, talent and other above the line categories.
