Why Dax Shepard at first wanted to keep relapse a secret - Page Six

Dax Shepard almost kept his relapse a secret but ultimately decided that sharing his story could help others struggling to fight their addictions.

The 46-year-old actor, who opened up about breaking his 16 years of sobriety in September 2020, said he wasn’t sure he wanted to share that he fell off the wagon out of fear that he would face financial repercussions.

“I did not want to [tell anyone] at all. I had all kinds of bizarre fears, like, I have sponsors on my show, is that something that could cost me money, financially?” he said of his “Armchair Expert” podcast on Tuesday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Money aside, Shepard was mostly fearful of letting his fans down.

“The number one thing I was afraid to lose was I get so much esteem out of being someone who’s vocally sober and I have people who write me, ‘I’m month one,’ or ‘I’m week two,’ and I love that,” she said. “That’s my favorite thing about being in public, so I was just terrified I would lose that. I really cherish that.”

But Shepard, who has two kids with Kristen Bell, had things put into perspective by one of his friends.

“I have a good friend that said, ‘You know if your real goal is to help people, it’s not very helpful that you’re 16 years sober and married to Kristen Bell’ … So the fact that you just fell, that’s the actual value,'” Shepard said. “So when it was framed that way to me, it got a lot easier.”

Due to incurring several motorcycle injuries over the years — resulting in seven surgeries — Shepard has regularly battled medicating himself for legitimate pain versus abusing drugs.

Bell and Shepard have been open about going to couple’s therapy since the beginning of their relationship.

They started dating in 2007 and got married in 2013.
