Joni Mitchell removes music from Spotify in protest of Joe Rogan’s podcast - The Verge

Joni Mitchell has decided to remove all of her music from Spotify, joining Neil Young in protest of Joe Rogan’s podcast that Young says spreads misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines (via The Wall Street Journal).

“I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify,” The Canadian singer-songwriter writes in a post on her website. “Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”

Mitchell also includes a link to an open letter to Spotify, which was signed by dozens of medical and scientific professionals in mid-January. It urges the platform to establish a misinformation policy to address the “misleading and false claims” propagated by the Joe Rogan Experience, such as Rogan’s suggestion that healthy young people shouldn’t get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Earlier this week, Young gave Spotify an ultimatum: keep his music or Rogan’s podcast. Spotify ended up favoring Rogan, and in line with Young’s wishes, the platform pulled all of his music. Young later said he “felt better” after getting his music removed, and then criticized Spotify for failing to offer lossless audio, an option that both Amazon and Apple Music provide. Apple has even been using Young’s departure from Spotify as an opportunity to take numerous digs at its competitor, going so far as to label Apple Music as “the home of Neil Young.”

In 2020, Spotify made the Joe Rogan Experience exclusive to the platform, and it has since come under fire for Rogan’s potentially misleading comments about COVID-19 and its vaccines. As it stands, it appears Spotify’s content policies prevent the platform from doing anything about Rogan’s podcast. In internal guidelines seen by The Verge, its policies seem to allow podcasters to state COVID-19 vaccines can cause death, but not that they’re “designed” to cause death. A screenshot of an internal message also viewed by The Verge reveals Spotify has reviewed numerous controversial episodes of the Joe Rogan Experience, and none “meet the threshold for removal.”

The Verge reached out to Spotify with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back.

Britney Spears Accused Jamie Lynn Spears Of Lying About Her Experience With Her Former "Zoey 101" Costar, Alexa Nikolas - BuzzFeed

"You're lying, just like you lied about Alexa Nikolas."

Image Group La / Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images

For context, in the memoir Jamie Lynn accused Alexa of spreading mean rumors about her on the set of the Nickelodeon show. However, Alexa has long said that Jamie Lynn was the one who bullied and excluded her on the show — and in turn accused her of "lying up a storm" in her book.

Michael Bezjian / WireImage / Getty Images

One thing that both Jamie Lynn and Alexa agree on is that Britney spoke to Alexa following a conversation with Jamie Lynn — but their accounts differ hugely. Alexa described the incident as a terrifying moment where Britney was "screaming" and "berating" her, while Jamie Lynn implied that Britney simply did it to defend her after she went to her for "guidance."

Todd Plitt / Getty Images

The key difference here is whether or not Jamie Lynn was honest when she spoke to Britney about Alexa's behavior on set.

Fast forward to yesterday, when Jamie Lynn posted on Instagram saying, "I can’t believe I’m officially a NATIONAL BEST SELLING AUTHOR! I have no words except how grateful I am that I was able share my story with y’all."

Michael Loccisano / Getty Images

In turn, Britney posted on her own Instagram, writing, "National best seller ???? DUH 🙄 …. the timing of your book was unbelievable Jamie Lynn … especially knowing the whole world had no clue what was really done to me !!!! My whole family including you is saying YOU DIDN’T KNOW …. Bullshit !!!"

Britney then referenced Alexa by name, saying, "The nerve of you to sell a book now and talk shit but your fucking lying just like you lied about Alexa Nikolas !!!!"

Dimitrios Kambouris / WireImage / Getty Images

"I wish you would take a lie detector test so all these masses of people see you’re lying through your teeth about me !!!! I wish the almighty, Lord would could come down and show this whole world that you’re lying and making money off of me !!!! You are scum, Jamie Lynn," she concluded.

Alexa herself evidently saw the post, as she wrote on her own Instagram, "Thank you Britney Spears! You are an inspiration."

This isn't the first time that Alexa has posted on Instagram about Britney — last year, she wrote “I support her" and "Free Britney" on Instagram amidst the singer's plea to end her conservatorship.

It's nice to see people supporting one another.

Sundance Film Festival Awards: ‘Navalny’, ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth’ Among Top Winners; ‘The Nanny’ And ‘The Exiles’ Take Grand Jury Prizes - Deadline

The Sundance Film Festival revealed award winners for its 2022 edition Friday. Like the rest of this year’s festival, which was forced to go all-virtual because of the recent Omicron surge, the awards ceremony played out on Twitter, with honors spread around across the diverse lineup unlike last year, when CODA swept the top honors.

Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, while the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize went to The Exiles directed by Ben Klein and Violet Columbus. Marquee Audience Awards wins went to Apple’s big sales pickup Cha Cha Real Smooth, and the surprise secrent-screening documentary Navalny, which won both the Audience Award in the U.S. Doc section as well as the omnibus Festival Favorite Award.

Winners were announced in the U.S. Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, World Dramatic and World Documentary competitions as well as the Next and the Short Film sidebars. Audience Awards, Grand Jury and Special Jury Prizes were bestowed. See the complete winners list below.

Top U.S. winner Nanny, a horror-thriller, centers on Aisha (Anna Diop), an immigrant piecing together a new life in New York City while caring for the child of an Upper East Side family. She is forced to confront a concealed truth that threatens to shatter her precarious American Dream. Michelle Monaghan and Sinqua Walls also star.

“For this Grand Jury Prize we celebrate a movie that flooded us with its compassionate and horrifying portrayal of a mother being separated from her child,” Sundance juror Chelsea Bernard said during the virtual ceremony. “This film cannot be contained by any one genre —it’s visually stunning, masterfully acted, impeccably designed from sound to visual effects, and the overall vision, expertly guided by Nikyatu Jusu, comes together offering its audience an electrifying experience.”

The Exiles revolves around activist and documentary filmmaker Christine Choy, who filmed the leaders of the Tiananmen Square democracy movement during the 1989 massacre. Midway through production, the project was abandoned and the footage was all but forgotten. In Exiles, she returns to the never before seen archive, and the stories of three key figures during the protests, who remain political exiles to this day.

Navalny, meanwhile, is a documentary thriller directed by Daniel Roher hailing from CNN Films and HBO Max. It focuses on Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, who gave Roher unparalleled access to him and his inner circle as he was recovering from being poisoned and decides to return home.

Among other notable winners tonight: a Grand Jury Prize in the World Dramatic competition going to Alejandro Loayza Grisi’s Utama from Bolivia, one of the festival raves from Deadline’s Todd McCarthy (read his review here). Finland’s Girl Picture won the Audience Award in that section.

The Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. Dramatic section went to K.D. Dávila for her comedic thriller Emergency, while Jamie Dack took the Director prize in that section for Palm Trees and Power Lines.

Last year’s awards solidified the bona fides of CODA, which played in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and was swept up by Apple in a fest-record $25 million deal. That pic, directed by Siân Heder, also swept on the fest’s awards night, taking four trophies in all including the Audience Award, Directing award, the Grand Jury Prize and a Special Jury Prize for the ensemble. It’s now an Oscar frontrunner.

This year, the real-life drama 892 took the U.S. ensemble prize in the lineup for a cast led by John Boyega, Nicole Beharie, Selenis Leyva, Connie Britton, Olivia Washington, London Covington and the late Michael K Williams.

Overall, this year’s class has been tougher to gauge, with acquisition activity somewhat muted and in-person reactions to Park City screenings not a factor. Still, Deadline broke big deals led again by Apple, which paid $15 million for world rights to Raiff’s Cha Cha Real Smooth.

In other spotlight deals in the market, Searchlight Pictures closed a deal for around $7.5 million for U.S. rights to Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, starring Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack, while Sony Pictures Classics paid about $5 million for North American and some international territory rights to the Bill Nighy-starrer Living.

On the documentary side, National Geographic picked up Fire of Love in a mid-seven-figure world rights deal, then followed that by acquiring The Territory. The latter pic, scored an Audience Award win tonight in the World Documentary lineup as well as a Special Jury Award for documentary craft going to director Alex Pritz.

Here’s the full list of winners. Click on the title to read Deadline’s review if available.

WGA Awards Film Nominations: ‘West Side Story’, ‘Dune’, ‘Licorice Pizza’, ‘French Dispatch’ & More - Deadline

The Writers Guild of America has penciled in the film nominees for its 74th annual WGA Awards, which will be virtual again this year.

The Original Screenplay category will see the scribes behind Being the Ricardos, Don’t Look Up, The French Dispatch, King Richard and Licorice Pizza vying for the hardware.

The Adapted Screenplay race will be among CODA, Dune, Nightmare Alley, tick, tick…BOOM! and West Side Story.

On the documentary side, Being Cousteau, Exposing Muybridge and Like a Rolling Stone will battle it out for the WGA trophy.

See the full list of nominated writers and screenplays below.

Winners will be feted at the joint 2022 WGA Awards on Sunday, March 20 — the last majors awards show before the 94th Oscars. This year’s eligibility period is March 1-December 31, 2021.

Read the WGA’s TV nominations here.

The WGAs honor outstanding achievement for original and adapted screenplays and documentary films, but some awards-contending scripts are ineligible because of WGA rules. It’s the only guild that requires a movie to have been produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement in order to be eligible. Those rules (read them here) kept a couple of 2022 awards-season regulars out of the mix today. Among them are Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast for Original Screenplay and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog for Adapted — scripts that could be front-runners for the Oscar in their respective categories.

Among the other ineligible screenplays in Original are A Hero, Pig, Mass, Parallel Mothers, Jockey, Flee, The Hand of God, Annette, I’m Your Man and Palme d’Or winner Titane. In the Adapted category, the ineligibles also include The Lost Daughter, Drive My Car, Passing, Cyrano and the year’s highest-grossing film Spider Man: No Way Home.
