R.I.P. novelist Peter Straub - The A.V. Club

Peter Straub, a novelist whose depiction of the supernatural in books like Julia, Ghost Story, and The Talisman often felt too big and too fantastical to really be defined by the limits of the horror genre, has died. This comes from The New York Times, which says that Straub’s wife, Susan Straub, confirmed the news and explained that he died at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York from “complications after breaking his hip.” Straub was 79.

Straub was born in Milwaukee in 1943, and as a kid he developed a stutter and had to relearn how to walk after being hit by a car and nearly killed. He became a dedicated reader and studied English at the University Of Wisconsin-Madison (the New York Times obit notes that he lived across the street from musician Steve Miller) before getting a mater’s degree from Columbia University. In the ‘60s, he moved to Ireland with his wife to work toward a doctorate, but instead he wrote and published his first novel, Marriages.

Straub later said that he wasn’t a fan of his first book, telling Zack Handlen for The A.V. Club in 2010 that it was “full of adolescent errors and real aimlessness” and that he has never allowed it to be republished because of that. With his third novel, Julia, Straub began to play with the supernatural, and though he didn’t intend it as such, the book was deemed a horror novel simply because it involved a ghost.

Julia was a hit, and though Straub continued to gently push back against the horror label, he began to use more supernatural elements in his writing (especially with books like the best-selling Ghost Story). The New York Times obit quotes him as saying that he wanted to take the horror genre and “pull it upstairs a little bit,” not by rejecting it outright but by trying to “make a little more of the material than has been made of it in the recent past.” Julia was later adapted into the Mia Farrow film The Haunting Of Julia (a.k.a. Full Circle) and Ghost Story was later adapted into a movie starring Fred Astaire.

It was around that time in the ‘70s that Straub became friends with another hotshot writer who was helping to redefine and repopularize the horror genre: Stephen King. King told the Times that Straub was “not only a literary writer with a poetic sensibility, but he was readable,” comparing him to Philip Roth “though he wrote about fantastic things.” King and Straub collaborated on The Talisman in 1984, a dark fantasy book about a boy traveling through an alternate universe version of our world. Though somewhat critically divisive, the book was a huge hit (at least partially because both King and Straub were arguably at the height of their powers), and it later spawned a sequel called Black House that became a tie-in with The Dark Tower, Stephen King’s other universe-hopping dark fantasy series.

A third Straub/King collaboration was always supposedly right on the cusp of happening, with Straub telling The A.V. Club that the two of them had talked about writing a third book “now and again” and would probably sit down and work it out within a few years. The third book never ended up materializing, but Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer recently signed on to develop a Talisman adaptation for Steven Spielberg (who has held onto the rights since before the book was published).

Straub’s final novel, A Dark Matter, was published in 2010 and won a Bram Stoker award from the Horror Writers Association. He is survived by his wife, his daughter (novelist Emma Straub), his son (who runs a production company in charge of adapting his father’s work), and three grandchildren.

Jennifer Lawrence reveals name, sex of her and Cooke Maroney's 6-month-old baby - Page Six

Meet Cy!

Jennifer Lawrence revealed her 6-month-old child’s name and sex on Tuesday, telling Vogue in her October 2022 cover story that she gave birth to a baby boy in February.

The little one’s moniker was inspired by one of her husband Cooke Maroney’s favorite artists, Cy Twombly.

The Oscar winner felt like her “whole life … started over” when they welcomed the infant, calling his arrival her new “day one.”

Lawrence, 32, explained, “I just stared. I was just so in love.”

The “Don’t Look Up” star also “fell in love with all babies everywhere” at the time, gushing, “Newborns are just so amazing. They’re these pink, swollen, fragile little survivors. Now I love all babies. … My heart has stretched to a capacity that I didn’t know about.”

Lawrence, however, was prepared to “be so forgiving” of herself if she did not immediately connect with her newborn.

“I remember walking with one of my best friends at, like, nine months, and being like, ‘Everyone keeps saying that I will love my baby more than my cat. But that’s not true. Maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?'” she recalled.

The “Hunger Games” star noted that she got pregnant before conceiving her son but had to get a D&C after suffering a miscarriage.

The pregnancy loss was not her first, as Lawrence “had a miscarriage alone in Montreal” in her early 20s.

The “Mother!” star, who is fresh off of a two-year acting hiatus, believes that motherhood will now influence the projects she pursues.

“I have had a pretty consistent theme in all my movies since I was 18,” she told the magazine. “I’m curious if, now that I’m older and I have a baby, I’ll finally break out of that.”

Before giving birth last year, Lawrence told Vanity Fair that she does not plan to make her child’s life public.

“Every instinct in my body wants to protect their privacy for the rest of their lives, as much as I can,” the then-expectant star said in November 2021.

In May of the following year, Ellen DeGeneres appeared to spill the beans on the sex of Lawrence’s baby.

“I do hear you sometimes talking to him,” DeGeneres, who is Lawrence’s neighbor, said during the May interview. “It’s so sweet.”

Tilda Swinton debuts dramatic neon yellow hair at photocall for her new film The Eternal Daughter during Venice Film Festival

Tilda Swinton debuted a head of neon yellow hair at the photocall for her new film The Eternal Daughter at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on Tuesday.

Showcasing her dramatic new look, she posed for photographers with a hand in her pocket and accessorised with a cherry beaded necklace.

The Beach star later changed into a large white shirt and contrasting black trousers as she modelled for portrait photographs at the festival.

The Eternal Daughter is directed by Joanna Hogg and stars Tilda, Joseph Mydell and Carly-Sophia Davies in untitled roles. Its trailer has not been released yet.

Its IMDb description reads: 'In this ghost story from acclaimed filmmaker Joanna Hogg, a middle-aged daughter and her elderly mother must confront long-buried secrets when they return to their former family home, a once-grand manor that has become a nearly vacant hotel brimming with mystery.'

The Venice Film Festival is the world's oldest and was first founded in 1932, celebrating filmmaking from around the world.

Speaking about the line-up director of the event Alberto Barbera said: 'The program is more varied than usual, placing affirmed filmmakers alongside directors in search of confirmation and, above all, talented newcomers aspiring for international recognition'.

'But what still prevails is the feeling that "Cinema still wants to try to explore ways of thinking, big themes and big questions, the profound relationships that tie people to one another, the power of feelings and memory and the ability to push one’s gaze beyond the horizon of the present.”'

Olivia Wilde brings 'Don't Worry Darling' to Venice, dismisses 'endless tabloid gossip' about the film - CNN

CNN  —

Olivia Wilde’s new film “Don’t Worry Darling” took center stage at the Venice Film Festival on Monday.

During a press conference for the upcoming thriller, Wilde, who directs and appears in the film in a supporting role, was asked about the project’s star, Florence Pugh. Pugh was absent from the press conference due to filming commitments she had on “Dune: Part Two,” but she will be attending the premiere screening of “Don’t Worry Darling” at the festival on Monday night.

“Florence is a force,” Wilde said. “We are so grateful that she’s able to make it tonight despite being in production on ‘Dune.’ I know as a director how disruptive it is to lose an actor even for a day, so I’m very grateful to her, very grateful to Denis Villeneuve (director of ‘Dune: Part Two’) for helping us, and we’re really thrilled we’ll get to celebrate her work tonight.”

Wilde added, “I can’t say enough how honored I am to have her as our lead. She’s amazing in the film.”

The director was asked about reports she and Pugh have experienced a falling out.

“As for all the endless tabloid gossip and all the noise out there, I mean, the internet feeds itself,” Wilde said. “I don’t feel the need to contribute. I think it’s sufficiently well-nourished.”

A moderator for the press conference redirected the conversation when a journalist asked Wilde a question about actor Shia LaBeof, who was originally cast to play opposite Pugh in a role that ended up going to singer and actor Harry Styles, stating, “I think that question has been answered,”

LaBeof recently pushed back on reporting he was let go from the project. He left the film because he didn’t feel the actors were given enough time to rehearse, according to a report from Variety.

“Don’t Worry Darling” also stars Gemma Chan and Chris Pine.

Styles, who is currently performing on a world tour, was asked about his future plans to appear on screen. The “As It Was” singer said he takes his life “day by day.”

“Making music is a really personal thing and there are aspects of acting where you’re drawing from experience, but for the most part pretending to play someone else,” Styles said. “That’s what I find the most fun about it.”

“Don’t Worry Darling” is being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which is owned by CNN’s parent company. The film premieres Monday night in Venice and will debut in theaters on September 23.

Christina Haack and Husband Josh Hall Have a Wedding Ceremony in Hawaii - E! NEWS

Aloha wedding bells!

Five months after Christina Haack and Joshua Hall privately wed, the couple exchanged vows in a romantic Hawaiian wedding ceremony.

"Shared vows in front of family and our close friends," Christina wrote on Instagram on Sep. 4, along with a photo of the couple from the sunset evening. "Everything in life has led me to where I am right now, which is exactly where I want to be. My dream man on the dreamiest island. Maui holds a special place in my heart. What an amazing night filled with love."

In the dreamy pic, Christina, 39, dons a long mermaid-style gown, featuring intricate floral appliqués and a sweeping train of tulle fabric, while Josh, 40, wore a light khaki-colored suit, along with black velvet loafers and a traditional Hawaiian ti leaf lei.

Back in April, a source confirmed to E! News that the HGTV star privately married her boyfriend of one year. Following the nuptials, Josh shared a supportive message on Instagram for his wife after the couple received some negative comments about their union on social media.

'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' was watched by more than 25 million globally, Amazon says - CNBC

In this article

Amazon Studios shared its first image of its upcoming untitled "Lord of the Rings" series, due on its streaming service Sept. 2, 2022.
Amazon Studios

Amazon said Saturday that the first episode of its "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" series attracted over 25 million viewers globally in its first day, making it the biggest ever debut for a show on its Prime Video streaming service.

The series is based on the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" books and is the most expensive television series of all time.

"It is somehow fitting that Tolkien's stories - among the most popular of all time, and what many consider to be the true origin of the fantasy genre - have led us to this proud moment," Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said in a statement.

At the show's U.K. premiere, Amazon founder billionaire Jeff Bezos hinted at how precious the series is to fans, saying one of his sons had told him "don't eff this up" when he learned of Amazon's acquisition of the story rights.

Episodes of the show will continue to debut weekly on Amazon Prime.

Earlier this month, HBO said its "House of the Dragon," a "Game of Thrones" prequel series, was the biggest series premiere in its history.

Clarification: This story was updated to reflect that "The Rings of Power" is based on the appendices to "The Lord of the Rings."
