'This Is Us' Recap: Season 6, Episode 14 — 'Miguel' - TVLine

This week, This Is Us viewers finally got the Miguel backstory episode they’ve been hearing for years was in the works.

And not only does the hour chronicle Miguel’s past, it also witnesses his passing: Jon Huertas’ character dies at the end of the hour. (For a statement from Huertas, click here.)

Read on for the highlights of “Miguel.”

A TOUGH MOVE | In flashbacks to Miguel’s childhood, we learn that his family moved to Pennsylvania to live with a cousin after Miguel’s father couldn’t find work in their native Puerto Rico. He wound up doing landscaping, and during one job at a well-off white family’s house, young Miguel went into the home to use the bathroom but got distracted by a baseball game on TV. The man of the house invited Miguel to watch Roberto Clemente and the Pirates play, then asked if the boy had been to a game yet. Miguel said no, but that he’d be happy to sit anywhere in the park in order to watch Clemente do his thing. The home owner corrects him: “Son, where you sit is all that matters.”

MIGUEL MAKES IT |Then, we get snippets from Miguel’s life as a young adult. He lands the job at the construction firm where he and Jack eventually work, but he only gets an interview when he submits his resume under the name “Mike Rivers” — because the multiple attempts he made to apply under his true name, Miguel Rivas, “never got a call back,” he points out to the boss, Mr. Lundy.

Miguel’s professional success irks his parents, and what starts out as a happy Christmas visit ends badly. His folks don’t like that their son has straightened his curls because “I’m not trying to look like I just flew in from San Juan, Mami.” Miguel can’t understand why his father, in particular, is angry about the new car he just bought or his offer to help pay for the constant nursing his aunt — who had a stroke in her 20s — needs. “Why is it so hard for you to watch me make something of myself in this place, in this place that you brought us to?” Miguel asks, hurt, and his father doesn’t have a good answer. Miguel leaves in anger.

THE BALLAD OF MIGUEL AND REBECCA | Flashes of Miguel’s life with Jack, Rebecca and Shelly follow. We watch Jack engineer a bar hangout so that Miguel and Rebecca, who don’t like each other much at first, are forced to get to know each other better. Then Miguel meets Shelly, they get engaged, they bring their first child, Andy, home from the hospital. Things turn less happy. Mr. and Mrs. Rivas argue while Andy and his younger sister, Amber, watch from the stairs.

The story jumps ahead. As we know, Miguel tearfully says goodbye to Rebecca just as they’re realizing they’re more than friends. His relationship with his children suffers more after his move to Houston. In 2008, he gets a call from his mother that his father has died. After the funeral, his mother reassures him that his father “died proud of you. He’d want you to know that.” And after Miguel marvels at how his elderly mother still provides much of the physically taxing care for her sister, she says, “Love is giving your heart without expectation.” He says he’s lost, and she reassures him that he will find his way — and someone to love.

One night, after seeing Beth’s Facebook post about baby Tessa (and Rebecca’s tagging within), he direct-messages her. Their relationship builds to long, frequent phone calls, and then they have dinner while he’s in Pennsylvania for work. Though the interaction is a little awkward at first, Miguel quickly (VERY quickly, right?!) cuts to what he’s been waiting to say. “I’ve never felt at home anywhere. And if I’m being honest, the first time that I ever felt homesick in my life was when I left you on that porch.” Rebecca smiles, gets up from her seat, sits next to him, and kisses him. “It’s really nice to see you again,” she says.

He retires and returns to Pennsylvania. They move in together, but their plan to ease the kids into this new knowledge at Thanksgiving is thwarted when Randall, Beth, Kevin and Kate walk in on their mom and Miguel kissing in the cabin kitchen. Though everyone is freaked at first, Randall and Kate eventually become OK with the idea. Kevin, as we know from the show’s first season, is not — especially when Miguel announces that he’s in love with Rebecca.

FALL RISK | The present-day portion of the episode takes place with Miguel and Rebecca living in the home Kevin built for them. Based on that, and Rebecca’s general state of being, I’m guessing that we’re in the era not too long after Kate and Philip’s wedding. Miguel wakes at 5:30 every morning, gets his and her medications sorted, and is ready and waiting for Rebecca when she wakes up around 6:45. We see bits and pieces of Miguel’s doctor’s visits: He’s had a hip replaced, he has high blood pressure, and he’s been experiencing shortness of breath during exercise. Still, he maintains to the doc, he doesn’t have time for a stress test. It’s clear he is Rebecca’s primary caregiver.

this-is-us-recap-miguel-dies-season-6-episode-15Which isn’t to say that there’s isn’t an aide that comes to the house to help with physical therapy, chores, etc. But Miguel won’t let her do much and often dismisses her in the middle of the afternoon; Rebecca is often agitated and confused by a change in routine or a new face in the house, and he later explains that doing everything himself just makes life easier…

… until it doesn’t. One night, he wakes to find Rebecca missing from their bed. She’s outside, giggling and twirling in the falling snow. And as he tries to cajole her back inside, he slips and falls, badly hurting himself. Still, when Kev, Randall and Kate visit for Thanksgiving at the big house, Miguel downplays his injuries. And the moment he steps out of the room to take a painkiller for his back, Rebecca becomes very upset and won’t calm down until Miguel rushes back and takes her in his arms.

this-is-us-recap-miguel-dies-season-6-episode-15THE BEGINNING OF THE END | After inadvertently catching a glimpse of the giant bruise on Miguel’s back, Kevin and his siblings corner the home health aide and ask her what’s going on. She tells them about the fall (Miguel insisted he’d just slept on his back wrong), and The Big Three sit their stepfather down for a talk.

In short: It’s time to get full-time help for Rebecca. Miguel balks — “She’s my wife! I made a vow.” — and insists that he failed everyone else he loved, so he’s not going to leave Rebecca’s side. Randall does what he does so well by using a soothing voice and being very straight with the older man: “We’re not doing this to you. We’re doing this for you,” he says. And realizing that they’re right, Miguel quietly relents.

The montage that follows finds the home health aide taking care of both Miguel and Rebecca. But when Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes” cues up on the soundtrack, you just KNOW things are going to get sad, quickly. Miguel’s heart is not in great shape. He starts using a cane. Kevin is around more to help both his mom and Migs. Eventually, Kevin visits Andy and lets him know that “your father may not have a lot of time left,” adding that his doctors are worried about heart failure. Andy doesn’t know how to react to that information, but Kevin leaves him with this: “Take it from me, man. You don’t want to leave things unfinished.”

Happily, Andy and his children are there as we watch a gathering of the families. And then less happily, everyone is wearing black, Rebecca is in a wheelchair, and Miguel is gone.

His ashes are spread at two places: the base of an apple tree in front of the new(ish) house, and a field in Puerto Rico on which he played baseball as a child.

Now it’s your turn. Did Miguel’s death hit you hard? Sound off in the comments!

Daniel Radcliffe’s ‘Weird Al’ movie looks delightful and weird, of course - Polygon

If the casting of Daniel Radcliffe as “Weird Al” Yankovic in the upcoming musical biopic about the accordion-tickling parody artist hasn’t piqued your interest yet, perhaps the first trailer for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will. Radcliffe is going all in as Yankovic in his early ’80s heyday for Roku’s streaming channel, the kind of thing one can do when you have Harry Potter residuals to cushion your most creative endeavors.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story “holds nothing back,” Roku says of its original film about the Grammy-winning artist, “from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like ‘Eat It’ and ‘Like a Surgeon’ to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle.” Yes, everyone’s having a good time here.

The teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much; Radcliffe, as Yankovic, performs parodies, squeezes the accordion, and models a variety of colorful Hawaiian shirts. Shirts-dislikers get a treat too: Radcliffe looks more shredded than “Weird Al” ever did (when not prosthetically enhanced, that is).

Joining Radcliffe in his “Weird Al” biopic are Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna and Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento. Al Yankovic and Eric Appel wrote the film. Appel is directing, and his credits include TV series like New Girl, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and NTSF:SD:SUV.

Here’s a quote from “Weird Al” about the movie about himself: “When my last movie UHF came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule. And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.”

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story hits the Roku Channel sometime this fall, giving you plenty of time to figure out what that channel is.

Depp’s $22.5 Million ‘Pirates’ Deal Collapsed After Op-Ed, Manager Testifies - The New York Times

Mr. Depp’s talent manager said the actor had been up to play Captain Jack Sparrow again until his ex-wife, Amber Heard, wrote an op-ed saying she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

Johnny Depp’s talent manager testified on Monday in the actor’s defamation trial that Mr. Depp lost a $22.5 million deal to star in a sixth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, published an op-ed in which she called herself a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

The exact timing of when Mr. Depp was cut from the “Pirates” franchise has become a pertinent question in the trial because Mr. Depp’s lawsuit against Ms. Heard claims that her op-ed, published by The Washington Post in December 2018, “devastated” his reputation and career.

Although the op-ed does not mention Mr. Depp by name, he has argued that it clearly referred to their relationship. Ms. Heard has accused Mr. Depp of assaulting her repeatedly during their relationship, which Mr. Depp denies.

At Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia, the talent manager, Jack Whigham, testified that the actor had a verbal agreement with Disney to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a proposed sixth film, but that in early 2019, it became clear that Disney was “going in a different direction.”

“After the op-ed, it was impossible to get him a studio film,” testified Mr. Whigham, who has represented Mr. Depp since 2016.

Lawyers for Ms. Heard have argued that it was not the actress’s op-ed that undermined Mr. Depp’s career but rather his own actions that led to bad publicity, seeking to prove during cross-examination of Mr. Whigham that Mr. Depp had, in fact, lost the “Pirates” job before the article was published.

Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, a lawyer for Ms. Heard, pointed to a previous deposition by Mr. Whigham in which he said that it had been the fall of 2018 — before the op-ed was published — when he came to understand that it was becoming unlikely that Mr. Depp would appear in the next “Pirates” movie.

Mr. Whigham testified that around that time, Disney had not yet made a decision about whether Mr. Depp would appear in the movie and it was “trending badly,” but he and the film producer Jerry Bruckheimer were still seeking to convince the company to keep Mr. Depp in the franchise.

“We had hope,” Mr. Whigham said, “and it became clear to me in early 2019 that it was over.”

In the op-ed, Ms. Heard asserted that her own career had been affected by becoming a “public figure representing domestic abuse,” saying that she was dropped as the face of a fashion brand and a movie had recast her role.

The idea for the op-ed came from the American Civil Liberties Union, and a communications department employee from the nonprofit organization drafted the article, according to earlier testimony from Terence Dougherty, general counsel for the A.C.L.U. Initially, the op-ed draft referenced Ms. Heard’s relationship with Mr. Depp directly. But those references were later edited out after back-and-forth between A.C.L.U. personnel and Ms. Heard’s lawyers about a nondisclosure agreement associated with the couple’s divorce, Mr. Dougherty testified.

Aside from discussions about the op-ed on which Mr. Depp’s lawsuit is based, much of the trial has focused on diverging accounts of physical abuse in Ms. Heard and Mr. Depp’s relationship. Mr. Depp testified that he has never hit Ms. Heard and that she was the aggressor, accusing her of punching him in the face and kicking a bathroom door into his head. Ms. Heard, who has not yet testified in the trial, has said in court papers that she never hit Mr. Depp except in self-defense or in defense of her sister, and that Mr. Depp tended to perpetrate violence against her when he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

On Monday, Ms. Heard’s lawyers sought to undermine Mr. Whigham’s claim that Mr. Depp had a formal deal for the sixth “Pirates” movie at all.

“Do you have any explanation for why there exists nothing — no piece of paper — nothing suggesting that Mr. Depp ever had a deal with Disney for ‘Pirates 6’?” Ms. Bredehoft asked.

Mr. Whigham said it was not unusual for an actor to have a verbal agreement for a movie that is later put into writing.

Ms. Bredehoft also pointed to other possible precursors to Mr. Depp’s reputational decline other than the op-ed, citing a headline from The Sun newspaper in Britain that called Mr. Depp a “wife beater.” That article was published in April 2018, she pointed out, and Mr. Depp sued the newspaper for it in June 2018 — both months before Mr. Whigham’s recollection of Disney’s declining interest in Mr. Depp for “Pirates.”

(Ms. Heard’s potential witness list includes Tina Newman, a Disney executive.)

Ms. Heard’s legal team has referred repeatedly to the defamation trial in Britain that arose from that lawsuit. But it appears that the team has been restricted from mentioning the outcome of the case, in which a judge in London ruled against Mr. Depp and found that there was “overwhelming evidence” that he had assaulted Ms. Heard repeatedly during their marriage.

Jury Rules Against Blac Chyna In Lawsuit Against The Kardashians - Yahoo News

A Los Angeles jury on Monday decided against model Blac Chyna over her claims that the Kardashian-Jenner powerhouse family sabotaged her reality television career and cost her millions in future earnings.

None of the defendants were present for the reading of the verdict. They were “at some gala,” the family’s lawyer said in court, presumably referring to the Met Gala in New York City. Chyna was present but had no visible reaction to the decision, The Associated Press reported.

Jurors began deliberations Thursday, spending about 10 hours in discussions before coming to their decision. Though they had the option to find certain family members guilty and others not, they decided none were at fault.

Chyna, born Angela Renée White, filed her lawsuit against the famous family in pursuit of more than $140 million, claiming the Kardashian-Jenners are responsible for coercing the E! network to cancel her 2016 show “Rob & Chyna,” in which she and now ex-fiancé Rob Kardashian starred leading up to the birth of their child.

“Kris Jenner set out to have ‘Rob & Chyna’ canceled,” Chyna’s lawyer Lynne Ciani told the jury in opening arguments. “And she brought in her three daughters to help accomplish that.”

“Rob & Chyna,” a spinoff of the E! megahit “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” ran for seven episodes, starting out with record-high viewership but holding on to less than half those viewers by the end of its run. While the show was initially renewed for a second season, the network later reneged on the plans.

Chyna’s lawsuit, which sought damages for defamation and interference of contract, accused her ex’s family of organizing an effort to pull the show from the air. She claims that Kris Jenner ― in coordination with her daughters Khloé Kardashian, Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner ― succeeded in doing so by falsely telling E! producers that Chyna had physically assaulted her son Rob.

Chyna admitted in court that she had wrapped a cord around her ex’s neck and pointed an unloaded gun at him in jest, but said she never caused serious harm.

Rob Kardashian testified that while Chyna left no visible marks on him, she made him fear for his life.

“Do you remember how Rob looked on the stand yesterday?” the Kardashians’ lawyer Michael Rhodes asked the jury in his closing arguments. “His pain was real. This is a real family. Yeah, they’re famous, but they’re real people. He got really badly hurt here.”

Rhodes also argued that E! simply canceled the show because the couple’s relationship ended.

“There is no ‘Rob & Chyna’ show if there is no Rob and Chyna,” Rhodes said in court.

While Rob Kardashian was originally named as lead defendant, a judge decided to try him separately due to Chyna’s different allegations against him, including that he violated revenge porn laws when he posted sexually explicit photos of her on social media in 2017. Chyna received a temporary restraining order against him over the incident.

Kris Jenner’s other children, Kendall Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian, were dismissed as defendants.

‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Harry Styles & Florence Pugh Eyebrow-Raising Official Trailer From CinemaCon Drops – Update - Deadline

Updated, with full trailer: The trailer that left exhibitors’ jaws dropping at CinemaCon is finally ready to watch: Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling.

Take a look at the Don’t Worry Darling trailer starring Harry Styles and Florence Pugh here:

Firing off with Brenton Wood’s “Oogum Boogum,” it looks like hubby and wife Jack (Styles) and Alice (Pugh) are in a good place in their marriage in 1950s suburbia: “You and me,” they say to each other. Chris Pine is leading the enigmatic Victory Project, which his upper-class clientele agree with “is changing the world.” But the thing the guys ask the girls is to stay put, at home. Alice questions Victory Project boss Pine at dinner, and his retort is, “I’m curious where she’s going with this.”

We later see there’s a woman from the neighborhood about to jump off the roof of her house, and another one crying that the guys “are lying about everything.” It looks like Alice is mixed up in the wrong cult, and she’s on the run. KiKi Layne and Gemma Chan also star.

CinemaCon Photos: Stars And Sneak Peeks Including Olivia Wilde, Dwayne Johnson, ‘Avatar’ And More

Lush cinematography here, including shots of cars racing in the desert, and yes, there’s some spicy shots of Alice and Jack.

Olivia Wilde

Onstage at CinemaCon, Wilde said Don’t Worry Darling is reminiscent of “Inception, The Matrix, Truman Show. It’s my love letter to the movies that pushed boundaries of ambition.” She then asked the audience to “imagine a life where you could have anything you ever wanted, not just the tangible things … but also the things that really matter — true love with the perfect partner, real trusted friendships. What would it take for you to give up that perfect life? What are you willing to sacrifice to do what’s right? Are you willing to dismantle the system that is designed to serve you?”

CinemaCon 2022: Deadline’s Full Coverage

During that presentation, as reported last week, Wilde was served with custody papers at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace by her former partner Jason Sudeikis, as Deadline told you first. That acerbic disruption didn’t jar Wilde nor rain on her parade as she kept calm and moved on during the presentation.

Don’t Worry Darling on September 23.

'Bad Guys' repeats at No. 1, Liam Neeson's latest misfires - KSL.com

This image released by DreamWorks Animation shows animated characters, foreground from left, Shark, voiced by Craig Robinson, Wolf, voiced by Sam Rockwell, Piranha, voiced by Anthony Ramos and Snake, voiced by Marc Maron in "The Bad Guys." (DreamWorks Animation via AP)

Estimated read time: 3-4 minutes

LOS ANGELES — The DreamWorks animated heist movie "The Bad Guys" was the top film in U.S. and Canada theaters for the second straight weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, while the latest Liam Neeson thriller suggested the actor's particular set of skills may be wearing thin with audiences.

"The Bad Guys," distributed by Universal Pictures, made $16.1 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, holding well with only a 33% drop from last weekend. The film, adapted from Aaron Blabey's kids' graphic novel, has helped reignite family moviegoing.

April moviegoing was largely dominated by Paramount Pictures' "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" — which stayed in second place with $11.4 million, bringing its cumulative total to $160.9 million — and "The Bad Guys," with $44.4 million in two weeks.

The latest Neeson thriller, "Memory," however, was mostly forgotten by moviegoers. The Open Road-Briarcliffe Entertainment R-rated release launched with an estimated $3.1 million in 2,555 locations. That's much in line with the last few films staring Neeson. In the past two years, "Blacklight" (a $3.5 million debut), "Honest Thief" ($4.1 million) and "The Marksman" ($3.1 million) all opened similarly.

The last Neeson thriller to make a dent was 2019's "Cold Pursuit," which debuted with $11 million and ultimately grossed $62.6 million worldwide. But either due to oversaturation or lackluster reception ("Memory" has a 30% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes"), a once dependable box-office force has gone cold.

"Neeson's pre-pandemic crime pics did well, including the successful 'Taken' series, but audiences are showing little interest now," David A. Gross, who runs the movie consultancy FranchiseRe, wrote in a newsletter. "Moviegoing activity is improving, but 'Memory,' as well as 'Blacklight' and 'The Marksman,' are hitting a wall."

The eighth-place "Memory" was the only new wide release on a quiet weekend in theaters ahead of the Friday release of Marvel's "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." The Walt Disney Co. release will effectively kick off Hollywood's summer season, one the industry is hoping will approach pre-pandemic levels.

Studios last week trumpeted their summer slates at the industry convention CinemaCon, raising expectations for big-budget films like "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Jurassic World Dominion."

The brightest spot in theaters currently continues to be "Everything Everywhere all at Once," which dropped just 2% in its sixth week of release with $5.5 million. The film, an existential metaverse action comedy starring Michelle Yeoh, has had unusually long legs in theaters, and with $35.5 million in sales so far, ranks as one of indie studio A24's biggest hits.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

  1. "The Bad Guys," $16.1 million.
  2. "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," $11.4 million.
  3. "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore," $8.3 million.
  4. "The Northman," $6.3 million.
  5. "Everything Everywhere all at Once," $5.5 million.
  6. "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," $3.9 million.
  7. "The Lost City," $3.9 million.
  8. "Memory," $3.1 million.
  9. "Father Stu," $2.2 million.
  10. "Morbius," $1.5 million.

Pete Davidson Addresses Kanye West's Claim He Has AIDS In Return To Stand-Up - HipHopDX

Pete Davidson made his return to stand-up comedy at The Hollywood Bowl on Thursday as part of Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival. It marked the first time the Saturday Night Live actor had performed comedy in three years.

Obviously, Davidson’s life has drastically changed since 2019. He’s currently dating one of the most famous women in the world, Kim Kardashian, who just happens to be Kanye West’s now ex-wife. Over the course of several weeks, Kanye targeted him on social media, decapitated him in the video for “Eazy” with The Game, nicknamed him “Skete” and accused the 28-year-old of having AIDS as he struggled with Kardashian’s new relationship.

Davidson addressed Kanye’s claim during his routine according to Entertainment Tonight, joking Ye was probably right because he’s a “genius.” He also quipped being humiliated is “weird when you can’t do anything about it.”

Davidson went on to joke about Jack Harlow collaborating with Kanye on Donda 2 but claimed he wasn’t bothered by it despite his friendship with Harlow. He later admitted if his King of Staten Island co-star Bill Burr went to Ye’s Sunday Service, it would be a different story.

Kanye West's Controversial 'Eazy' Video Yields Reactions From Pete Davidson & Kim Kardashian

Elsewhere in the routine, Davidson recalled going to a basketball game with fellow comedian Chris Rock in December 2021 “before life was over,” a reference to the Will Smith Oscars slap and Kanye’s harassment.

Ye has since stopped using social media and refrained from attacking Davidson as he reportedly seeks treatment. As a source told ET, “Kanye has been laying low and focusing on healing. He is trying to disconnect from all the drama that happened between him and Kim. He is focused on taking care of himself, getting healthier, and removing himself from all the craziness. He cares deeply about his family and kids. They are his number one priority and he’s working on himself.”
